How it Works
Today, despite everyone's best efforts, identity thieves strike nearly 9
million times a year and commit over $50 billion in fraud. You can become
a victim of identity theft when thieves are able to impersonate you and
acquire credit cards, home equity loans, and many other types of credit or
loans in your name.
Debix solves this problem by putting you in control of your identity. The
idea behind the Debix Network is simple - a thief can convince a bank that
he is you, but he can't convince you that he is you. The Debix Network
puts the power to authorize new credit accounts in your hands.
- 1. A thief applies for a credit card using your stolen identity.
- 2. You get an Instant Authorization call through the secure Debix network.
- 3. You press the star key on your phone to prevent the account from being opened.
The Steps In Detail:
- A thief steals your personal information and applies for credit.
- The creditor pulls your credit report and finds the Debix Safe™ phone number placed on your file.
Federal law requires the creditor to verify your identity before opening the account.
- The bank or creditor places an Instant Authorization™ call to you for approval through the Debix
Network.
- When answering your phone, you will hear your pre-recorded Debix Voice Key confirming to you
that the call is legitimate and not a phone scam.
- Without your pre-registered phone and 4-digit PIN, thieves cannot impersonate you.
- If you suspect the request is fraud, press the star key on your phone to stop the transaction
instantly and block the imposters. The fraudulent account will not be opened and your credit
remains safe and secure.
- You will immediately be joined by a member of the Austin, TX based Debix On Call Investigation
Team to investigate the attack and engage law enforcement as necessary.
You have the right to protect your reputation.
Your reputation is your credit score when looking for a job, securing a place to live, or taking
out a loan. In 2003, Congress gave you the right to place a fraud alert on your credit files - notifying
banks and creditors that they are not authorized to open new accounts without first verifying your identity.
At registration, Debix assigns a secure phone number to your account and places that number in
your credit files. (Some creditors require that phone numbers in your credit file match phone numbers
on your credit application. So, please be sure to include the Debix Safe phone number whenever you
apply for credit.)
When you or someone pretending to be you applies for
credit, the bank or creditor reviews your credit file and sees
your Debix Safe phone number. Federal law requires
banks and creditors contact you to verify your identity
before opening a new line of credit.
The law outlines the best practice - placing a call to the
number requested by a consumer - but stops short of
absolutely requiring creditors to place a call and gives them
the discretion to use “other reasonable measures.” The
Debix Instant Authorization System™ provides a multi-band,
multi-factor authentication that is the most secure and effective way for banks and creditors to follow
the best practice and verify your identity.
If a creditor elects not to call, utilizes "other reasonable measures", and opens an unauthorized
account in your name, you are still protected with Debix. Our insurance and recovery services will
provide you with financial protection and reimbursement and we will restore your identity.
Also, the Debix Audit Trail will demonstrate a call was not placed, and whatever action taken by the
creditor was not “reasonable”, because it resulted in fraud. Debix will then assist you in obtaining the
greater level of protection which you are entitled to under the law and ensures consistent response
from banks and creditors.
